Glass-fiber-reinforced polymer composites (GFRCs) have a wide range of applications. However
under complex service conditions
GFRCs are prone to internal damage that is not readily detectable
thereby posing potential safety risks. In this study
camphoric acid diglycidyl ester (CADE) was synthesized from bio-based camphoric acid (CPA) and subsequently cured with 4
4′-diaminodiphenyl disulfide (APD) to construct a CADE-APD vitrimer featuring a dual dynamic network based on disulfide and
β
-hydroxy
ester bonds. After compositing with glass fibers
the resulting composite exhibited excellent mechanical performance
recyclability
UV shielding
and damage self-reporting capability. Benefiting from disulfide exchange and transesterification reactions
the vitrimer network demonstrates rapid stress relaxation
with a relaxation time of 50 s and an activation energy (
E
a
) of 74.66 kJ/mol. Notably
mechanical damage induces disulfide bond cleavage
generating thiyl radicals that result in a visible green color change
enabling real-time damage. The composites could be rapidly degraded in
β
-mercaptoethanol
via
thiol-disulfide exchange. Owing to the introduction of a rigid five-membered ring derived from camphoric acid
both the vitrimers and GFRCs exhibit excellent mechanical properties. This study provides a new approach for the preparation of multifunctional bio-based glass-fiber-reinforced polymer materials.
